Part 5

From the doorway, Mrs. Claus cleared her throat.

Serena’s hand snapped back as if she got caught doing something naughty. “Oh, hello.”

Wink jumped to his feet. “Sorry we woke you.”

Mrs. Claus rubbed the sleep from her eyes. “I always know when someone is writing a letter to me. I don’t know how Santa sleeps through it.” She eyed the paper where Serena crossed her arms over it. “What’s your request this time?”

“You know me?”

As Mrs. Claus rolled her eyes, Wink held the chuckle back. “Of course, I know who you are.” With a soft huff, she went on. “Santa told me all about how you wanted to visit NPK.”

Wink hung his head. “He told us no.”

“He must have had a good reason.” She motioned to the miracle pin on Serena’s collar. “Looks like you found another way.”

“I’m sorry, but I promised to show her around.” Would Wink get punished again for breaking the rules?

With an exaggerated wink, Mrs. Claus said, “I don’t mind, just don’t let Santa catch you.”

Wink’s stomach filled with anxiety. “He’s not awake, is he?”

Mrs. Claus shook her head. “No. His alarm is set to go off on January 5th.”

Serena’s face brightened. That’s the day before the Epiphany.”

“Santa gives all of the elves their gifts at our big Ephiphany party.” He wished they could stay for that, but Santa would be upset if they came to NPK after he told them no.

As if Mrs. Claus was reading his mind, she patted his shoulder. “I suspect Santa has a gift for you, but probably won’t bring it until…” she paused, a slight smile curving her lips. “…until your wedding. She held out her hands for the paper on her desk.

Reluctantly, Serena picked it up and handed it to her.

“It looks like you won’t have to wait a whole year.”

What did Mrs. Claus mean by that? Wink gulped.

Mrs. Claus folded the paper so many times it disappeared into thin air.

Serena clutched her hands to her chest. “Valentine’s Day?”

“Just make sure you send an invitation addressed to me. Santa may not get around to reading it until November when all the other kids’ letters roll in.”

Serena hurried around the desk and wrapped her arms around Mrs. Claus. “You’ll come to our wedding, won’t you?”

Mrs. Claus held out her arm and wrapped Wink in the hug as well. “We wouldn’t miss it.” She released them both and directed her next comment at Wink. “I’ll make sure your parents are there as well.”

Serena’s eyes grew wide as she gripped Wink’s hand. “What will people think when elves show up at the wedding?”

Would he ever get used to the human sensation of loving her?

“I’ll make sure no one sees them as elves.” Mrs. Claus directed her gaze at Wink. “Now then, before the Elf Patrol makes their round, you need to finish up your tour and get your fiance back home in time for Christmas dinner.”
